16 April 2009

Dear Parents,

It is with great regret that I have to send you this email. I have just been notified (21:30, 16th April) by the Fairmont High School Governing Body that we are not allowed to make use of Fairmont High School’s Astro-turf for Mini Hockey purposes. The Governing Body has also put a stop to ALL Club games played in the evening. The idea was to have Friday night games after Mini Hockey to expose kids to the top Durbanville Hockey Club sides and to give kids the chance to watch our club players square up against some international and provincial players. The decision was made without a single match or Mini Hockey session being played.

I am still hopeful that common sense will prevail and that Fairmont will come to realise that the Mini Hockey programme Durbanville Hockey Club have put together is one that will first and foremost benefit the community, secondly it gives Fairmont a great chance to “Sell itself” to future pupils and hockey stars and lastly it provides the club with a long term future. Durbanville Hockey Club have invested a large amount of money and are the ONLY hockey club in South Africa, to offer Video Analysis to its Mini Hockey programme using Sportscode’s Gamebreaker software. We will continue to offer this service, but practices will have to be played on the grass fields at Durbanville Hockey Club.

I ask parents to please understand that this decision has been made by the Schools Governing Body and is definitely not supported by Durbanville Hockey Club. Please be understanding towards the Club Coaches and Members who offer their time, and knowledge without payment to provide quality coaching to kids.

Practice this week has been Cancelled

We will strive to be the best Mini Hockey programme in the country. This is hopefully just a minor hiccup. As of next week Mini Hockey will take place at the club fields. If Fairmont decide to change their minds we will notify you as soon as possible.

With Sadness,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to our New “Improved” Mini Hockey evening. I am sure that both parents and kids alike will find the atmosphere that of a fun friendly and family environment. One that you would be happy to associate yourself with.

Starting Friday, 17 APRIL 2009

We at Durbanville realise that no club is sustainable without involving the community and investing in the youth. So with this in mind we started a mini hockey project for Primary school kids to offer good coaching, at a very affordable price and with decent facilities. In years to come we want to have produced Provincial and National players from this project. Something that is a definite possibility.

By having a “Junior” or “Mini hockey” section players also get used to the club environment and that usually awkward transition from school to club hockey is a much easier process. If you have to analyse the provincial u18 sides throughout the country, up to 90% of players have received coaching outside of their schools, either by playing for a club or being involved in a well established mini hockey project.

Gamebreaker

Durbanville is very proud to announce that we are the only club in the WP and one of only 3 clubs nationally to have a video analysis software programme. The programme allows us to analyse games as well as individual players.

How does this help our Mini Hockey?

Well… Included in your annual fee, ALL kids will receive a CD/ DVD with footage of themselves hitting / stopping / tackling. Not only will they be able to watch themselves on the video, but the video will also have an international player doing the same skill next to them. This will help kids to self-coach or mimic a top international player.

My goal as Chairman and as a coach is to look back at Western Province Hockey in ten years time and see how many players Durbanville have in the provincial set up. It is about time that Durbanville Hockey Club become a force to be reckoned with and this process will be starting with our mini hockey initiative.

Please feel free to offer any suggestions or comments. We have an open door policy and all information is valuable.

With Regards,
Geoff Matthews
